Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology

The Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology is one of the basic pharmaceutical sciences’ departments in the Ege University Faculty of Pharmacy that was established in 1975. Pharmaceutical Microbiology examines the properties of microorganisms causing infections, the diseases caused by these microorganisms and the microbiological methods used to diagnose these diseases. Pharmaceutical microbiology is also interested in production, quality control and use of antimicrobial agents and microbial products, sterilization-disinfection techniques and principles of general hygiene.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology aims to educate pharmacists who assimilate basic concepts of pharmaceutical microbiology and have the ability to apply their knowledge in all areas of the profession. Our department also aims to carry out up-to-date researches that serve the public health by closely monitoring the developments in the field of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and conveying the information gained in this way to the students in the most effective way.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology primarily gives undergraduate courses named “Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Immunology-I and II” and optionally “Immunology”, “Infectious Diseases, Antimicrobials and Rational Uses”, and “Microbiological Applications in Pharmaceutical Industry”. The department offers Pharmaceutical Microbiology master graduate and PhD programs for the graduates from faculties of pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing and biological sciences. In addition, the department contributes to related issues in “Phytotherapy master graduate program” and some undergraduate courses such as “Independent and hospital pharmacy practices”, “Cosmetology”, “Good manufacturing practices in pharmaceutics”, “Pharmaceutical quality control” and “Pharmaceutical biotechnology”.
